Wilma Hollifield, 70. She cut and sewed work shirts at the Calfkiller mill from 1974 until the day it closed, then bought its last bolts of cotton out of the liquidation and set up on Depot Street. For thirty-six years she has hand-quilted baskets there, one at a time. This is the final collection — the street comes down at the end of the month.

Six Things You Won't Find on a Printed Basket
Every detail below is the result of thirty-six years of making the same thing well, and refusing to cut corners on any of it.
Lined in 1989 Mill Cotton
When the Calfkiller mill was liquidated, Wilma bought every bolt of shirting cotton nobody bid on — the same cloth she had cut work shirts from for fifteen years. Every basket since has been lined with it. The shade varies slightly bolt to bolt, because some sat closer to the window than others. Open one and you can see the difference. Nobody photographs the inside of a basket, which is exactly why the copies never bother to fake it.
Real 3-Layer Quilted Build
A heavy cotton-poly outer shell, a full batting interior, and dense quilting that locks all three layers together. Run your thumb across it. You can feel every stitch. That is not a print. That is real quilting — padded by stitches, not by foam.
Appliquéd, Not Printed
The motifs — from the Farmhouse Hens and the Bluebonnet Field to the Sea Turtle and the Patchwork Elephant — are individually cut, layered and stitched onto the panel by hand. They will not crack, peel or wash off. A printed graphic is a picture of a design. An appliqué becomes part of the basket.
Stands on Its Own, Empty or Full
No wire ring, no plastic frame. The batted, quilted walls hold the shape themselves, so the basket sits up straight in the corner whether it's stuffed with laundry or completely empty. It will not slump or collapse at the bottom.
Bartacked at Every Stress Point
Doubled reinforced canvas handles, bartacked where handles fail. Carry a full load of laundry from room to room without the seam pulling loose. Wilma has been bartacking these handles the same way since 1990.
Fifteen Years in a Laundry Room
A customer in Ohio bought hers in 2011 and wrote to Wilma this spring — fifteen years in the dampest, hottest room in the house, and the colors were still the colors. She only wrote to ask whether one handle could be restitched. It was, and it went back out the following Tuesday.

Wilma hand-finishes every basket and signs off on each one before it ships. Slight variations in the quilting pattern and motif placement are a natural part of handmade construction. Sometimes a wing sits a shade off center. No two baskets are exactly alike, and that is by design. The appliqué is hand-placed. The quilting is hand-guided. The bartacking is done one handle at a time. These are not flaws — they are the difference between a person and a printer. Thirty-six years of it.
