Where it started
Walter built kitchen cabinets for forty-three years. His wife Ruth has been losing her reading glasses for about the same length of time — windowsill, bread drawer, once the freezer.
Two winters after he closed the furniture shop he carved a dog out of a walnut offcut, with a shallow scoop along its back exactly the width of a pair of readers. He set it on her nightstand and said nothing about it. She hasn't lost her glasses since.
