Over two winters, one evening a week, at Vesta Sutton’s kitchen table in Newton County, Arkansas. She talked, her neighbour Junie Frye typed. The chapters are not ordered by season or by crop — they follow what goes wrong most often, because that is what she has spent eighty years answering. Every figure was checked against current extension guidance before printing, and Vesta read the finished manuscript back out loud herself.
