Ruth's Handmade Book-Stack Mug's
Handmade Glass in the Hills of West Virginia
Ruth Hollis, 71. She learned to work glass at her father's side — a glassman from the old factory town — and has shaped and hand-painted every piece herself for nearly forty years. This is her final collection of Book-Stack Mugs. When it's gone, the workshop closes for good.
"I was making a plain glass tumbler back in 1987 when the mold slipped and the glass slumped into layers. I was furious — thought I'd ruined a whole day. Then I held it up to the window, and it looked like a stack of books. The most beautiful mistake of my life. I've made them by hand ever since. These are the last."
— Ruth Hollis, West Virginia

Why This Mug
Six Things You Won't Find on a Printed Mug
Every detail below is the result of nearly forty years of making the same thing well, and refusing to cut corners on any of it.
Solid Hand-Shaped Glass
A thick, solid glass core built through Ruth's three-temperature process — no thin walls, no weak points. Pick it up and you feel the weight. This is not a light factory cylinder. This is real glass.
Hand-Painted, Not Printed
Every "book" in the stack is painted on by hand and fired into the glass, layer by layer, then sealed under a clear glaze. It will not crack, peel, or wash off. A printed mug is a picture of a design. Ruth's color becomes part of the glass.
Stained-Glass Color That Glows
Hold it to a window and the light passes straight through the layered glass, throwing color across your desk like a chapel window. No machine can copy that glow — it's what makes each mug feel alive.
A Shaped Glass Handle
The handle is drawn and shaped by hand to sit comfortably against the fingers — part of the same solid piece, not glued on as an afterthought. Balanced whether the mug is full or empty.
150 ml / 5 oz — Espresso & Strong Coffee
Sized for a rich espresso, a strong morning coffee, or a small tea. 9 cm (3.54 in) across the top, 9.5 cm (3.74 in) tall — a jewel of a cup, not an oversized tankard. Small on purpose, and heavier in the hand than you'd expect.
Built to Last for Decades
One of Ruth's customers has kept the same mug on her desk for twenty years — still perfect, still glowing in the morning light. That is not a throwaway. It's a piece of daily life, and this one is made the same way.
❖ Craft Note
"The difference between real hand-painted glass and a printed cylinder is obvious the moment you pick it up. A true hand-painted piece has depth — the color sits in layers within the glass, and the light moves through it instead of bouncing off a flat print. What Ruth makes is the real thing: a solid glass body with hand-applied, fired color, the same way glass artists have worked for generations. A piece built this way holds its color and lasts for decades."

❖ A Note From the Workshop
Ruth hand-finishes every mug and signs off on each one before it ships. Slight variations in the color and the flow of the glass are a natural part of handmade work. No two mugs are exactly alike, and that is by design. The glass is hand-shaped. The color is hand-painted. The glaze is fired one piece at a time. These are not flaws. They are the maker's hand at work — nearly forty years of it.

The Final Sale
Message from the Artist:
After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.
We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Ruth's customers are saying
Okay I am obsessed. I ordered this kind of as a treat for myself and it showed up
even prettier than the photos, the colors literally glow when the morning light
hits it. My coffee stays warm forever and honestly it just makes me happy every
single day. My kids keep trying to claim it as theirs but no chance haha!!

I am not usually a mug person but this thing lives on my desk now. It looks like a
little stack of books which is perfect because I read constantly, and every coworker
on my video calls asks about it. You can tell it is actually handmade, it has real
weight to it and the glass is thick and solid. Best gift I have bought myself in a
long time.

My daughter gave me this for my birthday and I nearly cried when I opened it. I have
my afternoon tea in it every single day and it feels special every time, the light
comes through the glass like a little stained window. It is well made and heavy in
the hand, nothing like the cheap things you find these days. I already told her I
want to be buried with it, I love it that much.
