Ray Ellison, 68, northern Vermont — a lifelong carpenter who wraps his houses in real bark from storm-felled trees. These are among the last he will ever build.

Wrapped in genuine bark from trees that came down on their own — never a living tree cut. To a small bird it reads like the inside of a real tree cavity, not a painted box.
Nothing on the wood, inside or out — the way conservation groups recommend. It smells of the forest, not the factory, and that’s often the difference between a house birds trust and one they ignore.
The entrance is cut to 3 cm (about 1.2 in) — right for chickadees, wrens, nuthatches and titmice, and small enough to shut out bigger nest-raiders like starlings and House Sparrows.
The pitched roof reaches out past the entrance like an eave, so driving rain sheds down the front and off the edge instead of running into the nest.
Solid, untreated wood under the bark, chosen to take rain and frost the way a real tree does. Left natural, it silvers gently over the years and settles into the garden.
The jute rope is set right out of the box — on a branch, hook or porch in a minute, no tools needed.
