Handwoven on the Mendocino Coast
Made by Linnea Holm, 72, on a single loom above the Pacific. After 52 years, her hands can no longer beat the weft tight — these are among her last 81 blankets.
“I didn’t weave these to be looked at. I wove them to be sat on, spilled on, hauled to the beach, washed, and hauled back out.”
— Linnea Holm, Mendocino, California

Why a Holm is not just a blanket

“The No-Plastic Dry Barrier.” Beaten so tight that damp ground, cold sand and dirt can’t wick through — the dry barrier of a plastic-backed mat, with no plastic at all. Pure cotton, so it still breathes.
“The Two-Face Weave.” The pattern is woven all the way through, not printed on top. Both sides are the right side — and nothing can crack, fade, or peel.
“The Hard-Beat Density.” Every pass of the shuttle is beaten tight — what makes it thick, warm, and almost impossible to tear. One summer versus thirty years.
“The Hand-Knotted Fringe.” The tassels are the warp ends themselves, knotted by hand. The edge can’t unravel, no matter how often it’s dragged across the sand.
“The Wash-and-Soften Cotton.” Machine washable, and softer every wash instead of pilling. Built to be used hard and washed often — never babied.
“One Cloth, Many Rooms.” Picnic blanket, bedspread, sofa layer, beach mat, tablecloth, or wall hanging. No wrong side, no single use.

Perfect for

Beach days · picnics · sofa throw · bedspread · camping · wall hanging · gifting

The quality check

  • Woven, never printed. The motif runs through both faces.
  • No plastic backing. Pure cotton that blocks damp and still breathes.
  • Beaten tight by hand. Built to outlast a decade of summers.
  • Hand-knotted fringe. The warp ends themselves — they won’t fray loose.
  • Softens with age. Better after every wash, not worse.
30-Day Peace of Mind
Live with it for a month. If it isn’t everything you hoped, send it back for a full refund — no fuss. With only 81 left, there’s nothing to lose by seeing one in person.

Excellent 4.9

What customers are saying about Maggie's bags

Picked one up for a road trip down the coast and ended up using it as my everyday weekender. The hand-quilting is unreal — feels like nothing else I own. The peace-sign wheels make me smile every time I grab it.

I bought this as a 50th-birthday gift to myself. The packaging alone made me tear up — handwritten note from Maggie, the numbered tag, the whole thing. After two hiking weekends and a Morocco trip, it still looks brand new.

Beth R., Asheville, NC

Three women at a pool in Andalusia stopped me to ask where I got it. The construction is unbelievable — every stitch placed by hand. You can tell the second you pick it up. Worth every penny.

Patty M., Austin, TX

I went down to Sausalito to visit Maggie last week. Bolts of fabric everywhere, little felt buses, old polaroids from her Mexico trip — so much heart in every piece. Walked out with two for me and one for my daughter‚Äôs 30th birthday.

How is each bag actually made?

Every Hippie Bus Weekender is hand-quilted by Maggie herself in her small workshop above the Sausalito bay. Each bag takes 14+ hours of skilled handwork — cutting the cotton panels, hand-quilting the outer shell stitch by stitch, sewing on the appliquéd VW Microbus motif (peace-sign wheels, sunflowers, headlights, square windows) piece by piece, then finishing with the YKK zipper, padded handles, and lining.

No assembly line. No outsourcing. No two bags are exactly alike.
