Janet's Hidden Animal Mug
Handmade in Seagrove, North Carolina · Final Collection
A stoneware mug with a small ceramic animal sitting at the bottom — sculpted by hand, joined while the clay is still wet, and fired in as part of the cup. You don't see it until you've finished your coffee.
Janet Pruitt has been making these in a converted garage since 1995. She throws every mug, sculpts every animal, glazes and fires them herself. The first one was a penguin, made for a five-year-old grandson who wouldn't finish his cocoa. He drank the whole cup to see it, then did it again the next morning.
Twelve years later, most of the people ordering them are in their sixties.
"There's something about getting to the bottom and having somebody there."
— Janet PruittWhy these are different
- Sculpted in, not glued in. Each animal is modeled by hand in the same clay as the mug and joined before firing — not a decal, not a plastic figure set into a finished cup.
- Faces cut one at a time. Eyes and mouth are cut under a lamp with a needle tool. A sixteenth of an inch changes the whole expression.
- Real kiln-fired stoneware. Vitrified at high temperature — heavy in the hand, holds heat, and keeps its glaze for decades.
- No two identical. Same shape every time, but glaze and figure come out of each firing slightly different. Yours won't match anyone else's exactly.
- Built for daily use. Dishwasher and microwave safe. This is a cup for every morning, not a cabinet piece.
- Three designs. Cat (several poses), penguin, and seal
Why this is the last collection
Janet's kiln has been in the corner of the garage since 1995. Elements, relays and controller stopped being made years ago. Last winter she tracked down the final set of parts anyone had left — and that set can be counted.
Every mug goes through the kiln twice. The last elements will carry roughly 28 firings: 14 finished loads, about 45 mugs each.
"A new kiln runs about eleven thousand dollars. I'm sixty-seven. I'm not buying a machine I won't wear out."

Two years in the dishwasher and the glaze still looks like the day it came.

Heavier than I expected, in the best way. It sits by my chair and it hasn't moved since it arrived.

I take my first cup out on the porch, and I finish the whole thing just to see the little face down there.

It's on the counter every morning now — the rest of my mugs might as well go to the church sale.
