"Happiness does not always come from grand things. Sometimes it comes from a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a neighbour, or a tiny handmade coat on a goose waiting by someone's front door." — Astrid Nilsen, seamstress, Northern Norway

The Astrid Nilsen Porch Goose with Outfit is a hand-cut, hand-sewn garden goose costume, made one at a time by 79-year-old Astrid Nilsen at the same sewing table where her own grandmother first taught her to thread a needle. Real wool, linen and cotton — never polyester, never printed fleece — cut, pinned and stitched by hand in a small sewing room in northern Norway. Every seam, ruffle, button and bow finished by the same pair of hands, for the goose that's about to make your whole street stop and smile.

Choose Your Outfit (all hand-sewn, no two exactly alike)

🍉 The Watermelon Summer Dress (Bestseller)

Green gingham cut on the bias so the ruffled skirt swings properly, a matching bow at the collar, and a tiny hand-sewn fabric watermelon slice tucked at the side. The story behind it: this was Astrid's very first design, stitched from a scrap of old flannel to keep the family's new concrete goose dry in the rain. "Everyone deserves a little watermelon in summer. Even a goose."

🌸 The Navy Garden Bonnet

Three tiers of hand-cut, hand-pressed ruffled cotton in navy floral, topped with a wide-brim bonnet tied with organza ribbon. Based on a photograph of Astrid's own mother's dress from 1962. "Every ruffle is cut and pressed separately. It takes longer. It shows."

🎃 The Halloween Witch

An orange pumpkin skirt with hand-embroidered black cat, a fitted velvet cape, and a proper pointed witch hat finished with dried flowers at the brim. Rooted in a memory of her son's 1987 school play. Astrid's most requested design every October — "the neighbours started ringing the doorbell to ask about it before the end of the first week."

Whichever outfit you choose, the making is identical: same real fabric chosen by Astrid, same hand-fitted pattern refined over five years, same adjustable back snap, same sewing table in northern Norway. No production line, no shortcuts, no assistants.

What Makes It Different

Most goose outfits sold today are mass-printed polyester sets in the same four colours with the same plastic snap. They look cheerful in a thumbnail, but within a season the fabric pills, fades, and the fit never quite sits right on a real statue. The Astrid Nilsen outfit is built the way Norwegian sewing rooms used to build things — slowly, for one goose at a time.

Every outfit is hand-fitted so it sits perfectly on the goose's actual shape — no gaps, no bunching

Built the way it should be:

  • Real fabric, real weight — cottons that hold their print, wools that keep shape through wind and rain, linens that soften beautifully with age. No polyester, ever.
  • Hand-fitted, not guessed — patterns refined over five years and hundreds of outfits, adjusted by hand before the final seam so bonnets sit level and hats stay on in a breeze.
  • A different outfit for every season — watermelon for summer, navy bonnet for spring, Halloween witch for October. The goose becomes a small seasonal clock.
  • The memory stitch — every design rooted in a real story: a school play, a mother's 1962 dress, a simple love of summer.
  • The smile test — "If I look at it and feel nothing, I take it apart. I am not making products. I am making small moments of happiness."
  • Adjustable back snap — fits standard 24–28 inch concrete or resin porch geese. Unsure of your goose's size? Send Astrid the measurements first.

The Story Behind the Sewing Room

After her husband passed, the house went very quiet. Then Astrid's daughter arrived one afternoon with a garden centre bag and a guilty expression: a concrete goose, knee-high, wearing a permanent look of mild surprise. Astrid looked at it, then laughed for the first time in weeks. When the first cold rain came, she found a scrap of old flannel shirt and stitched a tiny jacket in about an hour. A neighbour walked past the next morning, stopped, stared, and laughed so hard she had to hold the gate.

By the end of that week, three neighbours had asked for one too. That was five years ago. Since then Astrid has made over two hundred outfits — each one carrying a memory or a season, some carrying both. She sews every morning, in the same small room, on a machine older than most of her grandchildren. Her eyesight isn't what it was, and some mornings her hands are stiff before the coffee's finished. She sews anyway.

Her daughter manages the online orders and reads her the customer letters in the evenings. "I do not need to be rich," Astrid says. "I need to sew. Those are two different things." Each collection sells out — no factory standing by, no restock in two weeks.

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

If the outfit arrives and it doesn't make you smile, return it within 30 days for a full refund. Astrid stands behind every stitch that leaves her sewing room. She always has. She is not about to stop now.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Astrid's customers are saying

Honestly bought this as a joke gift for my mother-in-law and now SHE won't stop texting me about it. She's dressed her goose for every holiday since. I created a monster.

My husband said "we are not buying a Halloween outfit for the concrete goose" and now it's his favorite decoration on the whole street. He takes more pictures of it than our actual kids.

Jenny F., Madison

My grandkids named the goose "Watermelina" and now ask to visit her every time they come over. 10/10 unexpected bonding experience with a lawn ornament.

Lisa I., Asheville

Cute dress, good quality, but sizing ran slightly small for my particular goose (he's a bigger boy). Had to adjust the back snap more than expected. Still happy with it overall.
