Doris Kessler, 70. Twenty-eight years at the Cannon Mills towel plant, until the day it closed. At 65 she cut an owl out of a bath towel for a granddaughter who would not dry her hands — then a second one that same night, so there would be one at the kitchen sink as well. Deep Pile, Where the Absorbency Lives
A towel does not dry your hands with its surface. It dries them with its pile — thousands of fine fibres standing off the backing with air between them, pulling water in and holding it. Doris buys the heavy, densely set coral fleece. The copies use the thinnest fleece that still photographs like a towel, because nobody can see pile in a listing photo. Thin the pile and the water gets pushed around the front instead of taken up. That is the whole difference between a towel that dries your hands and one that smears them.
Serged, Then Turned and Stitched Again
Her mother spent thirty-one years on the hemming line at Cannon Mills and taught her one thing above all: the edge is the whole job. Doris overlocks every silhouette, then folds it and runs it a second time. It takes minutes she does not get paid for, and it is the reason her towels do not open up at the paw after eight washes.
At the Head, Not the Corner
On almost every towel sold in America the hanging loop sits in a corner — so the towel hangs folded, the fold stays damp, and a towel that never fully dries stops absorbing and starts to smell. Doris sets the loop into the seam at the top of the head, by hand. It hangs flat against the wall and dries through between uses. As she puts it: everybody blames the washing machine. It's the hook.
One Layer at a Time, Never Stamped
Factories stamp forty layers at once, which crushes the edge before it is ever sewn. Doris lays down a single layer and cuts around the paper pattern hanging on a nail above her table. Fourteen towels on a good day. It is the slowest possible way to do it and the only way she has ever done it.
Hand-Placed Appliqué
Every part of the face is a separate piece of fleece — belly, eyes, beak, ears, the bow on the cat — cut on its own, pinned, and stitched down individually, so the edges stand slightly proud and catch the light. Nothing is printed on. Nothing can crack, peel or wash off. And no two are placed exactly alike.
Four Years on the Same Two Hooks
A woman who bought a set at the very first market Doris ever did wrote to her last spring — four years in a house with two boys in it, and both towels still on the same two hooks. She only wrote to ask whether the capybaras were still available, because now she wants a set for her mother.

"You can tell a properly made fleece towel from a cheap one before you ever use it, just by pressing your thumb into the face. A good one has depth — the pile is dense and set close, so your thumb sinks in before it meets the backing, and that space is exactly where the water goes. The thin stuff feels like a blanket and behaves like a raincoat. Then look at the hem. A single overlock pass is what every low-cost mill does, because it is one operation instead of two. Serged and turned again is the old finish, it is slower, and it is the reason a towel is still square after a hundred washes instead of unravelling at the corners."

A Note From the Room Behind the Hardware Store
Doris finishes every towel herself and stitches a hand-numbered tag into the back seam before it goes out — she has done that since the first one, so she would know what she had made. Slight variations in the placement of the face and in the line of the edge stitching are a natural part of handmade work. Sometimes an eye sits a shade high, or a paw a shade wide. No two are exactly alike, and that is the point. One request from her, and she will tell you this whether you ask or not: wash warm or cold, tumble low, and keep fabric softener away from them. It coats the fibre and kills the pull, and it is the reason most people think their towels stopped working.
