Hand-Quilted in Nashville, Indiana

Delia Hartwell, 72 · 51 years at the quilt frame · releasing the last of her barnyard

“I found my own alpacas printed on a five-dollar pillow in a bargain bin. That’s the day I decided to let the real ones go. I’d rather a hundred families use one than one collector own it.”

What makes it a real one
🧊
The Raised Relief

Wool built up from behind so each animal stands a full half-inch off the cloth. Texture you can run your thumb across — not a photo of it.

🧵
Twelve Stitches an Inch

Set by hand, by feel — the density a bargain-bin machine never bothers with. Pull on one and it doesn’t give.

🌾
Linen-Weave Ground

Built onto a heavy, natural-textured linen-look cloth with real weight. It hangs and folds like fabric, because it is.

🔄
Slip-and-Swap

Hidden zip, fits a standard 18-inch insert. Swap animals with the season; the empty cover lies flat in a drawer.

🧺
Everyday Heirloom

Colorfast and built to be handled — survives a child, a cat, and a Sunday wash without pilling or fading.

🏠
Made by a Person

Hand-finished in Indiana, not stamped out by the thousand. There is a hand in every one — and you can feel it.

“Stuffed appliqué is one of the hardest textile techniques to do well — the wool has to be built and stitched so it holds its dimension for decades, not months. You cannot fake it with a print. When people say a piece ‘feels alive,’ this is the technique they’re describing. Work at this level is getting genuinely rare.”

— Margaret Ellison, Textile Conservator, American Folk Textile Guild

The quality, plainly
  • Raised, not printed — real dimensional appliqué you can feel with your eyes closed.
  • Hand-finished front — twelve stitches to the inch, set by a person, not a machine.
  • Heavy linen-weave ground — real fabric weight, not thin printed poly.
  • Built to be used — colorfast and washable, made for kids, cats and everyday life.
  • The last batch — when these sell through, there is no second run.
30-Day Peace of Mind

Hold it, feel it, live with it. If it isn’t what you hoped, email us within 30 days and send it back — simple as that.

A note on handmade: Each cover is hand-finished, so no two are exactly identical — a stitch, a shade, a raised edge may vary slightly from the photos. That is the fingerprint of a real one, not a flaw.

The Final Collection

A note from the sun room:

For 51 years, Delia Hartwell has hand-quilted her animals at the frame in her glassed-in sun room in Nashville, Indiana. The market that once paid for real handwork has been hollowed out by bins of five-dollar factory copies — so she is letting the last of her animals go, at a fraction of what the galleries once asked. When these are gone, the frame comes down. There is no second batch.

What people say once it’s in the house

Customer photo: child petting the alpaca trio cushion on a sofa

I’ve bought the cheap printed ones before and they went flat within a month. This is a different thing entirely — the alpacas actually stand up off the fabric. My kids keep petting them.

Customer photo: Highland cow cushion on a farmhouse rocking chair

Bought the Highland cow for my mother, who grew up on a farm. She teared up — said it was the first thing in years that felt made by a person instead of a factory. The stitching is unbelievable up close.

Daniel P., Asheville, NC

Customer photo: sheep trio cushion in a child's nursery

Washed it after a whole summer of my toddler dragging it around and it came out perfect — no fading, no pilling, the animal still raised and soft. I bought a second one before they’re gone.

Karen S., Fort Collins, CO

Customer photo: close-up of the raised wool on the sheep cushion

The photos don’t do it justice. You can run your thumb across the sheep and feel every ridge of wool. It’s the nicest thing in my living room now.

Customer photo: llama trio cushion on a reading chair

I ordered the moment I read she was closing the frame. It arrived and I actually teared up — this is an heirloom, not a throw pillow. Heartbreaking that the bins pushed her out.

Customer photo: two animal cushions on a made bed

Bought two before they sold out — the alpacas for me and the llamas for my daughter. Quality you just don’t find anymore. Wish I’d found her work years ago.

Our cat claimed the Highland cow the day it arrived and hasn’t moved since. It gets a comment from every single person who visits. Worth every penny.

How is each cushion made?

Every cover is hand-quilted by Delia Hartwell in Nashville, Indiana. Using a technique called stuffed appliqué, she layers wool batting under each animal and works it up from behind, so the fleece rises a full half-inch off the cloth — then sets twelve stitches to the inch by hand. Each cover fits a standard 18-inch insert and closes with a hidden zip along the bottom seam. Choose from four designs: Alpaca Trio, Sheep Trio, Llama Trio, or Highland Cow & Calf.
