Delia's Hand-Quilted Animal Cushion
Hand-Quilted in Nashville, Indiana
Delia Hartwell, 72 · 51 years at the quilt frame · releasing the last of her barnyard
“I found my own alpacas printed on a five-dollar pillow in a bargain bin. That’s the day I decided to let the real ones go. I’d rather a hundred families use one than one collector own it.”
— Delia Hartwell, quilter
Cover only. Fits any standard 18-inch (45 cm) pillow insert — insert not included, so you can use the one you already have.
Wool built up from behind so each animal stands a full half-inch off the cloth. Texture you can run your thumb across — not a photo of it.
Set by hand, by feel — the density a bargain-bin machine never bothers with. Pull on one and it doesn’t give.
Built onto a heavy, natural-textured linen-look cloth with real weight. It hangs and folds like fabric, because it is.
Hidden zip, fits a standard 18-inch insert. Swap animals with the season; the empty cover lies flat in a drawer.
Colorfast and built to be handled — survives a child, a cat, and a Sunday wash without pilling or fading.
Hand-finished in Indiana, not stamped out by the thousand. There is a hand in every one — and you can feel it.
“Stuffed appliqué is one of the hardest textile techniques to do well — the wool has to be built and stitched so it holds its dimension for decades, not months. You cannot fake it with a print. When people say a piece ‘feels alive,’ this is the technique they’re describing. Work at this level is getting genuinely rare.”
— Margaret Ellison, Textile Conservator, American Folk Textile Guild
- Raised, not printed — real dimensional appliqué you can feel with your eyes closed.
- Hand-finished front — twelve stitches to the inch, set by a person, not a machine.
- Heavy linen-weave ground — real fabric weight, not thin printed poly.
- Built to be used — colorfast and washable, made for kids, cats and everyday life.
- The last batch — when these sell through, there is no second run.
Hold it, feel it, live with it. If it isn’t what you hoped, email us within 30 days and send it back — simple as that.
A note on handmade: Each cover is hand-finished, so no two are exactly identical — a stitch, a shade, a raised edge may vary slightly from the photos. That is the fingerprint of a real one, not a flaw.
