Deborah Hollis, 71. She learned to quilt at her grandmother's frame as a girl and has worked at the same machine since 1984 — one room, one pair of hands, more than 22,000 bags. This is the final collection. The county takes the building on October 3rd for a data center transmission corridor, and there is no second workshop.

When my mother passed I couldn't bring myself to cut into it, so I copied it instead — block by block, onto small quilted bags for the women I'd worked with at the mill. Genuinely Quilted, Three Layers

A cotton face, a full batting interior and a lining, stitched through as one piece. Run your thumb across it and you can feel every row. The padding is part of the structure, not glued behind a lining — which is why the bag has a shape at all when you set it down.

Stitched Into the Cloth, Not Printed On It

The flowers are worked into the fabric with thread, not printed onto the surface. They can't crack, peel or wash off, because there is no layer sitting on top to come away. Look at it in raking light and you can see the pattern stand slightly proud of the cloth.

Deborah finishes every bag and signs off on it before it ships. Small variations in the quilting lines and in exactly where a flower falls are a normal part of work done by hand — a petal an eighth of an inch off where she meant it is not a fault, it is how you know a person sat down and did it. No two are identical, and that is the point. Each one carries a numbered cloth tag stitched into the inner seam, written by her. The numbers run to roughly 1,400, and then they stop.
