Darlene's Hand-Quilted Tree Skirts
Quilted By Hand In A Workroom Above A Blue Ridge Hardware Store
Darlene Pruitt, 69, has quilted for thirty-one years and sold at the Carolina craft fairs for more than twenty. The building sells in January — what's on the shelves is the last of it. Limited quantities.
“A woman at a fall show outside Asheville told me she'd spent eighty dollars on a Fraser fir that morning and would be wrapping an old bedsheet round the bottom of it, same as every year. She wasn't even complaining. That's just what you do. I drove home and quilted the first one that week.”
— Darlene Pruitt, Spruce Pine, North CarolinaThe standard skirt is 36 inches. On any full-size tree that leaves the stand's legs poking out at three o'clock and nine o'clock, and you spend December not looking at them. At 48 inches the stand is simply gone, and there's still a deep border left for the presents.
The scene was drawn so the quilted roots meet the real bark and carry on. Stand the tree in the middle and the join disappears. That was the whole brief Darlene set herself — the tree should look like it grew where it stands.
The roots, the moss, the pine cones and the stones have real relief. You can find them with your hand in the dark, and once the lights are on, the stitching catches them. There is nothing on the surface to peel, crack or wash off.
Wadded and quilted through, so it has weight. No curl at the edges on day one, no rucking up when someone walks past, and no sliding about once a pile of presents is sitting on it.
Nobody photographs the bottom of the tree, but it's the first thing you see from the doorway, it's what every present in the house sits on, and it's where the grandchildren end up on Christmas morning. Soft is not a small thing there.
The tree is different every year and the ornaments change. This doesn't. Darlene has customers on their twelfth Christmas with the one she made them — long enough that their daughters have started asking what happens to it.
“Let me be straight about what this is, because people get romantic and then they're disappointed. I don't weave the cloth — nobody has for a hundred years. What I do is the cutting, the layering and the quilting, and I've done that for a living since 1995. It's a cotton-poly blend, not pure cotton, and that's a choice rather than a compromise: cotton gives you the hand and the breathability, the polyester is what stops it going limp and grey after six Christmases in a loft. The scene is quilted into the panel. It is not a print and it is not a transfer, and if anybody tells you those last ten years under a tree with a dog and a water stand, they haven't tried it.”
Darlene Pruitt · quilter, 31 years, Spruce Pine, North Carolina- One of the final run. What's left was put by over the last several years alongside Darlene's orders — limited quantities, and no more coming. The workroom on Oak Avenue changes hands in January 2027, there is no apprentice, and nothing is made after that.
- 48 inches across — not 36. Covers the stand and its legs completely, with a deep border left over. Measure your stand before you buy anything else; most skirts are sold at a size that doesn't finish the job.
- A 4-inch centre opening. Drops over any standard stand post and closes in neatly around the trunk, without leaving you looking down into the water basin.
- Quilted through, not printed on. Cotton-poly face, firm wadded interior, stitched all the way through — the same construction Darlene has used on every quilt since 1995.
- The scene wraps all the way around. There is no front and no back, so it reads from every side of the room rather than only from the sofa.
Put it under your tree and live with it for a week. If it isn't right for the room, send it back within 30 days for a full refund — one email, no photographs, no explanation needed. A piece like this either suits the room it ends up in or it doesn't, and that is difficult to judge from a screen.

What Darlene's customers are saying
I almost didn’t order because I figured my old skirt was fine. It’s a felt circle I bought in 2011. The new one came on a Tuesday, I put it down, and my husband walked in and actually stopped. In thirty-one years he has never once commented on a decoration.

Mine is 48 inches and that’s the whole thing. My last one was too small and you could see the stand legs sticking out either side, which drove me crazy every single year. This one just — finishes it.

I bought it for the deer. I kept it because the presents sit on something soft now instead of sliding around on a sheet of felt. My granddaughter sat on it for an hour on Christmas morning

I have a nine-foot tree and a stand the size of a bucket. This is the first skirt I’ve owned that actually hides the thing. The weight of it is what surprised me — it doesn’t slide around when you pile presents on it.
