Made in One Room in Lewisburg, West Virginia

Curtis Hedrick, 71. His father Everett opened the shop a block off Washington Street in 1961 and painted Hedrick & Son across the window when Curtis was six. Curtis took it over in 1984 and has carved 11,482 dachshunds at the same bench in the forty-two years since. This is the final run. The building sold in March, the rent went from $600 to $1,800, and he hands the keys back on September 30th. There is no second workshop.

"A woman came in wanting a wedding present the autumn I took over in 1984, and couldn't settle on anything. While she was deciding she noticed the dog asleep under the bench. Chester lay under there every working day for thirteen years. She asked if I could make something that looked like him — it took me four tries and most of a week to get the head right, and I've been cutting that same shape ever since. He's been gone since 1997. There have been two dachshunds in here since and neither of them ever got carved. These are the last of them."

Why This One

Six Things a Moulded One Cannot Do

Almost everything sold in this shape is poured into a mould. This one is cut out of a block with a knife, and every difference below follows from that single fact.

◆ Material

Solid Wood All the Way Through

Carved from one piece of Appalachian basswood — the wood American carvers have used for painted work for two hundred years. Not resin, not plywood, not MDF, not a veneer over something cheaper. What is under the paint is wood, right through to the middle.

◆ The Test

No Mould, So No Seam

A cast piece always carries a fine raised line where the two halves of the mould met — look along the belly or down the spine of any listing photograph and you will find it. Paint softens that line but never hides it. There is no seam anywhere on this one, because there was never a mould for it to come out of.

◆ Damage

A Knock Leaves a Dent, Not a Hole

Resin is brittle wherever it is thin, and in this shape the thinnest points are always the ear and the back legs. Wood gives where resin snaps. And if you do chip the colour, what shows through is basswood — which you can touch in with a dab of paint instead of throwing the thing away.

◆ The Finish

Painted by Hand, One at a Time

Curtis paints on Thursdays because Thursday is the day the shop is quiet, and he has done it on a Thursday since about 1990 for no reason he can give you. Every piece is brushed by hand and sealed. Under the colour you can still feel where the blade went.

◆ Variation

Yours Will Not Match the Photograph

Cut by hand off the same shape, so the ear sits a little differently and the curve of the back lands slightly deeper on one than on another. People write to him about this more than anything else. It is not a fault. It is how you know somebody sat down and did it.

◆ Age

It Is Allowed to Get Older

Wood takes marks and keeps them — a knock against a tap, a ring from a wet bottle, forty years of being picked up and put down. It reads as age. A moulded piece has no way of getting older: the paint is either intact or it is chipped, and there is nothing in between. This one is meant to end up looking used.

◆ Craft Note

"You can tell carved from cast in about four seconds, and most people have never been told how. Run a thumb along the back. A moulded piece is uniformly smooth because the mould was smooth, and somewhere on it there is a seam. A carved piece is faceted — you feel small flats where the blade changed direction, and there is no seam anywhere because there was nothing to pull it out of. Basswood is the right choice for painted work too: close-grained enough to hold a crisp edge, soft enough to cut cleanly. A piece made this way doesn't fail on a schedule. It just collects marks."

Quality Promise

Five Things You Get With Every One

Made by Curtis, Start to Finish Every piece is cut, carved, sanded, painted and checked by Curtis himself in the room his father opened in 1961. No factory, no assembly line, no second bench, nobody else's thumbprint on it.
Carved From Solid Basswood — Never Cast Rough-cut from a block, then shaped with a knife and a gouge in the same order every time: the drop of the chest, the set of the ear, the line of the back. The head takes the longest and decides whether it looks like a dog or a doorstop.
Paint Over Wood, Not Over Filler Sanded through three grades, hand-painted and sealed. Chip the colour on a cast piece and you find grey filler underneath with nothing to sand into. Chip this one and you find basswood — touch it in, or leave it and let it look like something that gets used.
No Seam, and No Two Alike Nothing came out of a mould, so there is no raised line anywhere on it — and no two pieces are identical. One ear sits higher, one back dips deeper. Yours will not match the listing photograph, and that is the only honest way to sell a carved object.
754 Left — Final Run, No Reorders He counted them himself, twice, on a Sunday, with a pencil and the back of an invoice. When the keys go back on September 30th there is no second workshop and no restock — not because of demand, but because there will be no room left to carve them in.
◆ ◆ ◆

90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

If it isn't right when it arrives — the weight, the colour, the way the ear sits, anything at all — send it back within 90 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms. One email is enough. The deadline on the workshop does not change this.

◆ A Note From the Workshop

Curtis finishes every piece and looks it over before it ships. Small differences in the carving — an ear an eighth of an inch off where he meant it, a slightly deeper dip along the back, a brush mark you can find with a thumbnail — are a normal part of work done by hand with a blade. People sometimes apologise to him about it, which he finds funny. It is not a fault; it is the evidence. No two are identical, and that is the point. The count runs to 754, and then it stops.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

800+ Happy Customers

Excellent 4.9

What Curtis' customers are saying

Got the black one and it looks so much better in person than I expected.
I had a cheap resin one before that chipped at the ear within a year and you could see grey underneath, this one is actual wood so a knock just leaves a mark.
Holds a regular bottle no problem, I keep a sauv blanc in it on the counter.
Took the photo about four minutes after opening the box because I was that pleased with it.

Ordered the purple one for our dining table and it has not moved since.
My husband rolled his eyes at first and now he is the one who repositions it when the table gets cleared.
You can feel the tool marks under the paint on the back which I did not expect for the price.
Mine has one ear a little higher than the other and I have decided that is a feature.

Terri L., Chandler, AZ

Bought the pink one for myself after a rough spring, my dachshund passed in March and this was the closest thing I could find that actually looks like a real dachshund and not a cartoon.
The paint job is clean, no drips, no thin spots on the legs.
It came wrapped in plain paper with a handwritten note which honestly got me a bit.
Sits on my sideboard with a rosé in it and I look at it every single day.

Joanne P., Nashua, NH

Honestly I ordered this because of the story and figured I would be a little let down.
I was not.
I went looking for the seam that the article mentions and there is not one anywhere on it, and the surface has small flat spots where the knife went instead of being smooth like molded plastic.
Mine is the natural wood one and it sits on the kitchen island next to where I charge my phone.
