Barbara's Hand-Quilted Storage Baskets — Product Information
◇ ◆ ◇

Hand-Quilted in a One-Room Shop in Irvine, Kentucky

Barbara Combs, 72. She started in 1988 with four baskets in the trunk of a car and a Saturday market, on a 1961 Singer her mother-in-law taught her on. Thirty-eight years later she has made a little over four thousand, alone, in the same room off Main Street. This is the final collection — a transmission corridor takes the street at the end of September.

"I priced the first one at ninety dollars. I about couldn't say it out loud — ninety dollars, here, in 1988. I had every intention of carrying that basket home again and putting it back in the closet. It was gone before eleven in the morning."

— Barbara Combs, Irvine, Kentucky

Why This Basket

Six Things You Won't Find on a Printed Basket

Every detail below is the result of thirty-eight years of making the same thing well, and refusing to cut corners on any of it.

◆ The Giveaway

Layered, Not Printed

Hold it up and look at the front from the side. Every piece of the picture — every petal, every leaf, every wing — is a separate piece of cloth, cut out and stitched down, so the edges stand slightly proud of the surface and catch the light. Lookalikes have turned up on the big marketplaces and in a listing photo they can pass. They are printed. The front is flat, and every single one of them is identical.

◆ Construction

Real 3-Layer Quilted Build

A heavy cotton-poly outer shell, a full batting interior, and dense quilting that locks all three layers together. Run your thumb across it. You can feel every stitch. That is not a print. That is real quilting — padded by stitches, not by foam.

◆ The Machine

Sewn on a 1961 Singer

Ruth Combs taught her daughter-in-law to sew on it in the winter of 1974. When Ruth died the machine came to the house, and every basket Barbara has made since 1988 has come off it. Cast iron, one treadle, never been to a shop. There is no second machine and there never was.

◆ Structure

Stands on Its Own, Empty or Full

No wire ring, no plastic frame. The batted, quilted walls hold the shape themselves, so the basket sits up straight in the corner whether it's stuffed with laundry or completely empty. It will not slump or collapse at the bottom.

◆ Handles

Bartacked at Every Stress Point

Doubled reinforced canvas handles, bartacked where handles fail. Carry a full load of laundry from room to room without the seam pulling loose. Barbara has been bartacking these handles the same way since 1988.

◆ Longevity

Seventeen Years in a Laundry Room

A customer in Missouri bought hers in 2009 and wrote to Barbara this spring — seventeen years in the dampest, hottest room in the house, and the colors were still the colors. She only wrote to ask whether one handle could be restitched. It was, and it went back out that Friday.

◆ Craft Note

"You can tell a genuinely quilted piece from a printed one the second you pick it up. A real one has loft — you feel the batting under the surface, and the stitching lifts the pattern into relief, which is what gives the cloth body and weight. What Barbara makes is the real article: three-layer quilted construction with hand-placed appliqué, the way women in these counties have built them for generations. Made like that, a piece holds its shape for decades rather than years."

Quality Promise

Five Things You Get With Every Basket

Made by Barbara Alone — The One-Room Rule Every basket is cut, quilted, appliquéd and finished by Barbara herself, in the same room off Main Street she took in the summer of 1988. No assembly line, no second pair of hands.
Appliquéd, Not Printed — The Way to Spot a Real One Each piece of the motif is cut and stitched onto the panel separately, so the edges stand proud and catch the light. It will not crack, peel or wash off. Copies are printed, flat, and all exactly alike.
Real Quilted Construction — 3 Layers, Batting Inside, Self-Standing Heavy cotton-poly face, full batting interior, quilting throughout. The basket holds its shape when loaded — and when empty. No wire ring, no plastic frame.
Seven Designs — Some Already Down to Single Figures Harvest Pumpkins, Sunflower Field, Patchwork Elephant, Bears & Pines, Wildflowers & Butterflies, Sea Turtle & Palms, Guitar & Waves. When a motif is out, it is out.
214 Baskets — Final Collection, No Reorders Barbara's final collection is strictly limited. 214 baskets remain. She has to be out of the room by 30 September, crews start clearing the corridor on 6 October, and there is no second room to sew in. There will be no restock, ever.
◇ ◆ ◇

90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

If the basket doesn't feel right when it arrives — whether it's the weight, the stitching, the motif, anything — send it back within 90 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms. Just an email to our team.

◆ A Note From the Room on Main Street

Barbara finishes every basket herself and writes the date in pencil on the inside of the base before it goes out — she has done that since the first one, so she would know what she had done. Slight variations in the quilting pattern and motif placement are a natural part of handmade construction. Sometimes a petal sits a shade high, or a leaf a shade wide. No two baskets are exactly alike, and that is by design. The appliqué is hand-placed. The quilting is hand-guided. The bartacking is done one handle at a time. These are not flaws — they are the difference between a person and a printer. Thirty-eight years of it.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Barbara's customers are saying

This is the prettiest storage thing I have ever owned and I mean that. The flowers and butterflies are so cheerful, it honestly makes my whole bedroom feel brighter. I keep my extra throws in it at the foot of the bed and it doubles as decor. My mom saw it on a video call and immediately asked me to order her one.

I use mine as a laundry hamper in the utility room and it completely changed how that corner looks. The sunflowers on the dark blue feel more like a piece of decor than a hamper. It holds a full load of towels no problem and the handles do not dig into your hands when you carry it. My only regret is not ordering two.

I got this for fall and it made my entryway look cozy the second I set it down. The colors are rich and not cheap looking at all, the sunflowers are my favorite part. Its light enough that I can carry it around the house with one hand. I will be buying the other prints for the rest of the year.

I bought this for the blankets that always ended up on my living room floor and now they actually have a home. The guitar and the waves caught my eye right away, my husband plays and he loves it. It stands up on its own even when its only half full which was my main worry. Way sturdier than I expected for a fabric basket.
