Arlene's Hummingbird Lamp
Cast, Painted And Lit By Hand In A Toledo Workshop
Arlene Petrak, 68, restored church windows in Toledo and Sandusky for thirty years. She has been casting and painting this hummingbird since the October she got tired of looking at an empty feeder hook — these are the last 412 she will ever sell.
“The ruby-throats leave here the first week of October. Not gradually — they are simply gone one morning, and that feeder hangs there with nothing to do until late April. I took it down for twenty-eight years without thinking much about it. Then one October I did not want to look at the empty hook anymore, so I made something to put in the window instead.”
— Arlene Petrak, Toledo, OhioDark bronze base and branch, jade green over the crown, magenta at the throat, soft yellow through the breast, and wings running blue and green into magenta before going gold at the feather edges. People walk past it, and then they come back.
The colour deepens, the hibiscus at the base glows from inside, and the wall behind fills with scattered warm light that shifts as you move around it. Diffusion, not a beam — the same trick a cathedral window plays, small enough for a nightstand.
Arlene paints with transparent pigment rather than opaque colour, so the light travels through it instead of stopping at the surface. It pools a little deeper along the edge of each panel — which is why lit panels read as depth rather than flat colour.
Thirty years of restoration taught her what happens to leaded glass that moves: solder works loose, came flexes, panels rattle. A lamp travels, gets dusted, gets carried to another room. So she casts it in resin — the way it actually wants to be built.
The bronze-finish base is weighted, so the piece sits down on a sill or a nightstand instead of tipping when a sleeve catches it. It has the heft of an object in the hand, not the hollowness people expect at this price.
Every casting is painted by hand, panel by panel, so the colour settles slightly differently each time. Hold two side by side and you will see it. That variation is the reason she still paints them herself.
“Let me say the obvious thing before anyone else does: this is not glass. I could have made it in glass — I know how. But a hummingbird in lead came would be a clumsy, heavy thing, and the wing tips would need support lines running straight through the part you want to look at. The windows that came to my bench broken were almost never the ones sitting in a wall. They were the ones somebody had taken out of the wall. I was not going to spend thirty years learning that and then mail people something built to fail.”
Arlene Petrak · stained glass restoration, 30 years, Toledo, Ohio- One of the final 412. Cast from the two molds Arlene has left and painted before the end of the season. She will keep making them for grandchildren and for the church bazaar in December — but not in production runs, and not online.
- Painted by one person, one at a time. Not printed, not decal-applied, not sprayed. Transparent pigment laid panel by panel with a fine brush.
- Thirty years of glass behind it. The shape of the hibiscus, the dark lines between the panels, the way the light diffuses rather than beams — all of it comes straight out of restoring church windows.
- Nothing to plug in. Three AA batteries in the base, no cord, no outlet. It can stand on the sill where the feeder hangs in summer, which is where Arlene keeps hers.
- Yours alone. Hand-painted with transparent pigment, so the colour pools differently on every single casting.
Put it where you were planning to put it, switch it on after dark, and watch what the colour does to the wall. If it is not what you pictured, send it back within 30 days for a full refund. One email, no questions.

What Arlene's customers are saying
Took this to show my sister what I’d been going on about. It sits in the front window and after dark the whole corner goes amber. I’ve stopped turning the overhead on in that room.

Mine lives on the bookshelf and it earns its spot switched off, which I did not expect. The dark lines between the panels catch the afternoon light. My neighbour assumed it was an old leaded piece until I told her otherwise

It’s on the nightstand and it’s the last thing I switch on before I read. Barely bright enough to light the page, which is exactly the point — I wanted something warm in the room, not another reading lamp.

Took a picture the minute I got it out of the box. It has real weight to it. I was braced for hollow plastic at this price and it is not that at all.

My feeder comes down the first week of October and that hook sits empty until spring. This is on the sill now, right where I see it from the sink. Not the same thing, but the window isn’t dark.
